Fiestas, festivals and ferias

The Spanish love to get together and what better way than to celebrate with a festival. The local community will come together to watch or take part in a procession through the streets with marching bands and wonderful costumes. Some ferias will be celebrating a saint while others celebrate local talent, or food and drink products. Every month of the year there will be a feria of one sort or other and if there is not one in your town then you can be fairly sure that there will be one in a nearby town or village.

Alhama de Granada is no exception to this and whichever you choose to go to, you can be sure of a good time.

The year begins with Fiesta de los Reyes - the Three Kings Day celebrated on January 5th where a procession of children is led by the three kings followed by music for all to enjoy.

In February is the wine festival where local producers show case their produce.

In March is Carnival - a week of events before Lent.

Easter is celebrated with parades with events from Thursday to Easter Sunday.

Feria San Juan: Midsummer is celebrated in Alhama with a fair. Bars and fairground rides are set up in the main square and various bars and businesses from the town offer free Alhama stew or paella and free beer or wine.

Through July/August is Verano Cultural where there are regular celebrations of dance and music; flamenco and tango; theatre and cinema. The music festival is held for a couple of days in early August which includes an opportunity for budding musicians and singers to take part in a talent contest.

Romeria on August 15 every year is the day to celebrate wine! Free stew, drinks, music and dancing, and Andalusian horse displays.

Feria September in the first week another four days and nights of food and wine, music, dancing …. the municipal pool is free to visit all week.

Christmas/New Year - enjoy the lights and music in the square and treat yourself to eating out in style. You can book in advance for a five course feast at Pato Loco or Ventorro, the two best restaurants in the area, on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.
